BCA LEVEL 3
As an artist, I have always had an interest in the medium of photography. Rather than moulding things to your perception, photography forces you to instead mould your ideas onto a set frame. I have an interest in music and tattooing, both of which I wish to continue towards in my future. I am also extremely interested in spirituality, and art relating to it. In five years time, I hope to be employed as a tattoo artist.

Slideshow of edits from my project.
Throughout this project, I chose to present the idea of time through the use of exposure. With my first shoot, I edited my images together to create a double exposure of multiple images. I quite liked my final edits for this shoot, but felt that I could present the theme of time more effectively. From artists like Henri Cartier-Bresson, I was inspired to focus on dynamic features within my images, to imply the passage of time. However, I decided to carry this further through the use of slow shutterspeeds.
Scan
In order to create my scan, chose to sketch forms of light from different time periods, I believe this shows the concept of time well. I wanted to present the changes and evolution of lighting overtime. Within the editing process I enhanced the image by adjusting the contrast so that the pencil lines appear sharper, however I felt that manipulation wasn't necessary. As well as this I removed blemishes using the magic wand and brush tools.
I chose to compose the subjects of the scan into rows of three. All of the sketches were my own and so I faced no legal issues in the process. I enjoy sketching, as it allows me to freely create my own images. It was also quite interesting to present the evolution of light. To improve my scan, I could've used a fine-liner to go over the drawings so that they would come out more clearly in the scan. |
image
I have implied the passage of time within this image through the movement of light, this was done with the use of a slow shutter-speed. During editing I used the magic wand tool to select the light-streams already present in the image. I then duplicated it, and flipped it to create a symmetrical geometric form. After this, I successfully created my own glow stroke, using a reverse content-aware gradient, from a pale-yellow colour to transparent. The fact that the stroke is content aware means that it is applied based upon the selected shape. After I had created the stroke, I made a copy of the light trails and added a motion blur, which I then rotated to 90 degrees. I chose to manipulate this image, in order to create a more abstract image of time. I also feel that the use of geometric forms links well to the work on Henri Cartier-Bresson, and his use of composition.
Out of all the shoots and photos that I completed, this is my favoured piece, I enjoyed the photo-shoot as although it was tedious, it was entertaining to go on a walk at night with friends to find the location - a nearby church. Additionally, playing with light and shutter-speed is satisfying. If I were to improve this photo, I would've chosen a less busy background- perhaps no background, so that the light streams were more prominent in the scene, although I think that the building helps link to time as it an old one. The scene of this piece has public walkways within the area and so I faced no legal or ethical issues during the photography process. Although, I could understand people feeling deterred from taking images of religious buildings for sacred reasons. Walking into people was a safety concern from the model but there was not much danger involved due to the time I chose to shoot- the area was not populated.

Video
I have tried to portray the passage of timing using light streams, this was done by using a slow shutter speed. I chose to record the video at night so that the light source was more prominent although unfortunately the model is visible within the video. Whilst creating the video I found it hard to stabilize the camera, if I were to re-shoot this video I would use a tripod dolly. Within the editing process I found it hard to choose audio, the original audio was unprofessional as my operation of the camera can be heard and so I replaced it with a tranquil rainforest audio. I chose to use peaceful audio to coincide with the light trails within the video, emphasizing the flow of time. As well as this, I believe I successfully chose to slow down a segment of the video, so that the viewer can focus on time passing. My experience in photography definitely helped when constructing this video as I understand how to set shutter speed as well as manually focus the DSLR camera.
